New Literacies

New literacies include such formats as television, multimedia, film and advertising. The advent of social networking and web 2.0 technology has opened up the opportunities for a new language of decoding and language development.

Students need to develop the skills to assess the new ways of making meanings, to be critical, and even sceptical of the persuasiveness of the text. Visual literacy means being able to decode the viewing experience to locate meaning in a manner that makes the visually literate person an active participant in the viewing process, not a digital couch potato!
